Understanding Travel Insurance

What is travel insurance?

Travel insurance is coverage for medical expenses and material or physical losses incurred while traveling. It’s for those traveling outside of the US for work, school, vacation, missionary work, and group travel, or even those looking for Schengen compliant plans or even au pair coverage. Additionally travel insurance can provide you daredevils with extreme sports coverage.

Additionally, it’s for those traveling outside of their home country, not to the US and Canada. Travel insurance can cover you in the event that your trip is delayed or cancelled; your baggage is lost; or even if the airline you're traveling with, goes into financial default. Your travel insurance policy can be as diverse and comprehensive as you choose it to be.

Travel policies fall into one of two categories: Travel Medical Policies and Travel Medical + Trip Protection Policies. Travel Medical + Trip Protection Policies include Medical benefits and provide either Trip Cancellation and Cancellation for Any Reason benefits.

As their names imply, Trip Delay and Cancellation Policies offer insurance in the event that your trip is delayed or cancelled. Such policies offer protection if illness, inclement weather, flight or cruise cancellations, among other things, affects your trip. Trip Cancellation for Any Reason gives you the added peace of mind, that should you need to cancel your trip for any reason - say because of a personal obligation, a last minute deadline at work, or if you simply change your mind - you’ll be covered. Keep in mind that you have to purchase such a policy at least a week before your departure date and most plans only cover up to 75% of total trip cost.

Is travel insurance actually worth it?

Yes. A travel insurance policy is a small investment that provides you with exponentially greater benefits, should you ever need them. Keep in mind your domestic policy and programs such as medicare many provide coverage when you’re abroad. Additionally, your US health insurance may not provide any kind of trip protection. Check with your provider before going on your trip.

Travel insurance is a small investment that pays for itself several times over. Most people do not realize the costs associated with trip interruption, medical evacuation, and repatriation - which become astronomical in no time-at-all. Having the right policy means protection for your health and wallet.

What if you have diabetes or high blood-pressure? Many travel insurance plans provide coverage for the emergency onset of pre-existing conditions, ensuring peace of mind and access to coverage should you need it.

Travel insurance provides you access to a number of resources, such as around the clock support, emergency assistance - meaning medical assistance, help in case of identity theft, assistance with replacing lost passports and documents - as well as directories of hospitals and health-care providers, among others.

How much does travel insurance cost?

Travel insurance costs vary by plan. For both types of travel policies the plan's deductible as well as its maximum limit are determined by the specifications of your trip.

Both Trip Protection and Travel Medical Policies can vary within themselves in regard to the type and extent of coverage provided, which in turn affects the price of a given policy. For example, your trip cost, duration, destination and method of travel factor in determining the cost of your coverage.

What should I look for in a policy?

What you look for in a policy depends on you, your destination, and the nature of your trip. Are you just looking for medical coverage? Do you want a policy that protects you in the event that your trip is cancelled or delayed? Policies are often flexible and customizable, and you can find what you’re looking for in just a matter of minutes.

What information is required of me to purchase a policy?

Your full name; date of birth; and a valid credit card is required to purchase a policy. Also, information about your trip's duration, as well as, travel destination(s) is needed. However, no medical examination is required.
