Understanding Schengen Visa

What is the Schengen Visa?

About the Schengen Agreement

The Schengen Agreement was first signed in 1985 in the town of Schengen, Luxembourg and was responsible for abolishing many of the EU’s internal borders to enable passport-free movement across most of the area. The pact’s first members were Belgium, France, Germany, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands. Since taking effect in 1995, 21 more countries have joined the Schengen Area, with a total of 22 EU and four non-EU members now participating in the agreement.

The main benefit of Schengen was the creation of a single external border with a single set of rules for policing that border. Other features include:

  • Common rules on asylum
  • Joint efforts in fighting drug-related crime
  • Common list of countries whose nationals require visas
  • Shared access to the Schengen Information System (SIS)
  • The right of law enforcement to follow criminals across borders
